of the campaign to prevent gun violence. the attorney for the michigan and responsible gun owners. let's start with you. you were pretty outspoken saying this is time to bring in new gun control laws. >> yes. if this doesn't wake us up, i don't know what will. i was heartened that the president said we had to take meaningful action and the only thing he can do is lead a crusade for reasonable gun control legislation in congress. these massacres are taking place more and more often. we saw bay the way today a similar incident in china where a mad man attacked an elementary school in china with a knife with 22 injured children. not dead. that's the difference. in the united states we have 9,000 people killed with guns last year in similar countries like germany, 170 and canada 150. there is a reason for that. >> what would you like to see in terms of specific gun control? >> there a number of pieces of legislation we have been pushing. no reasonable gun owner who is a sportsman can object to bans on assault weapons made only to kill as many human beings as possible like in a military situation.

for one of the busiest days of the year. elsewhere, parts of wisconsin, iowa, and michigan dug out from more than a foot of snow. the storm was blamed for at least nine deaths in half a dozen states. the day that some pegged as the "end of the world" came and went without incident. the focus on december 21, 2012, was said to be based o projections in an ancient mayan calendar. in mexico, tourists and new age spiritualists gathered to greet the day at mayan archaeological sites. and thousands converged on stonehenge in england for an "end of the world" party coinciding with the winter solstice. it may not be doomsday, but americans are feeling less hopeful about the future. the university of michigan's consumer confidence index fell this month to the lowest point since july. and wall street gave ground today on worries about the lack of a budget deal in washington. the dow jones industrial average lost almost 121 points to close ear 13,190. the nasdaq fell 29 points to close at 3,021. for the week, the dow gained about half a percent; the nasdaq rose 1.7%. those are some of the day's maj

in michigan and he meets up with bob dole. the two of them nowhere near politics. both of them so wounded and talked all the time in that hospital about what they would do in the future. both wanted to be doctors but both so harmed that being a doctor was, at that point, just completely out of the question. they had to come up with other careers and i talked with both of them about their relationship a while back and they describe that time in the hospital. take a listen. >> i used to watch him play bridge. he was the best bridge player in the hospital. we sat around and talked about what we were going to do with the rest of our life. i said, bob, what are you going to be doing? and one thing about bob dole, he had had his life mapped out. really mapped out. he says, well, when i get back, i'll be a county attorney. then i'll be in the legislature. the first opening of congress, that's where i'll go. i said, gee, that's a good idea. >> inouye actually beat dole and said, i'm here in the congress, where are you? dole joined him and later were both world war ii heroes. this is a generation

was amputated. he spent 21 months recuperating from his wounds in an army hospital in michigan. during there he met a lifetime friend, future majority leader bob doyle, another young g. i. also wounded in the european theater. senator dole told senator inouye he bland to go to law school and eventually serve in congress. dan inouye what's elected to congress in 1959 as hawaii's first congressman. bob dole what's elected to congress a year later. senator inouye always joked, i went with the doyle plan and i beat him. three years later dan inouye what's elected to the senate and he's been a soft and powerful voice for the people of hawaii ever since. although senator inouye was an unabashed progressive democrat he always put his country first and his party second. dan was a vibrant and vital presence in the senate, and in death he will remain a legend. his last words on earth, aloha, and it's with a heavy heart that i and we bid aloha, goodbye, i love you to a friend and legend of the senate daniel kent inouye. bill: what a life. he died of respiratory complications at age of 88 on monday. what a
